my dog broker her tooth or teeth (canine upper and lower on right jaw) last week. I took her to the emergency room because she was drooling and vomiting. My husband and i thought it was her upper right canine tooth the entire time for some reason and when we took her to the regular vet the next day he also said it was her upper tooth and wrote it one the paperwork. I took her to get it worked on today. Before they put her under they called me to tell me that they thought that she would not need a root canal and that they would just do a filling. The entire time i thought they were talking about the upper canine. Well, i went to pick her up and the vet had given her a root canal for her LOWER canine and filed it down with a filling (looks weird). We were shocked because her upper canine is completely broken off and nothing was even done to that one. Now the vet wants to do the other one tomorrow . Is it good to put a dog "under" two days in a row? My dog is 15 month old chocolate lab

i forgot to mention that the vet said she did not even see the broken upper tooth so that is why she did not even do it ....you would have to be blind not to see it so that worries me. She is filling in for two vets (our regular vet is one of them) who are on vacation and i am sure she is overwhelmed but how could she miss it? Anyway, she said she would do the second one for free but it still worries me...my dog is my baby and i do not fully trust this woman. Should i get a second opinion?

Yes..Its Safe...The Vet Wouldnt do it if Not...We have put dogs under twice in two days for various Reasons....Just Sucks the Vet didnt do Both Teeth..But A Root Canal Takes Alot of Time..He may not have wanted to keep her Under That long at one time! Or Simply Ran Out of Time With Clients to see..I dont know How Vets Do All they Have to do..They work Harder than anyone I know!!!

No . I would Not Suggest Doing It Again . Putting A Dog Under Ansthestics For A Period Of Time And Then Just Taking Them Off Is Very Traumatic . I Would Just Let It Settle For A Few Days And She If She Returns To Her Normal State.

A topical anesthetic is always used on the area. Sometimes, a sedative is also used, to calm the animal down, or if other procedures are being done. If the dog is really difficult to handle, or needs a ton of stitches they might be put under general anesthesia. It's usually a choice made by the vet, but the owner can almost always change the way things are done if they want.

YOUR instinct is RIGHT.
Let your puppy- baby heal for a week or more.
Take her home- they will charge you a kings ransom to keep her.

The length of time and experience for such a procedure is varied among vets. So it may have been dangerous to keep her "under" that long to "do" both jobs.

I am sure that the Vet picked the worse of the teeth and did it first. Most times the go for the infection over the injury. In my experience with large animals. [horses]

Reschedule her for 10 days if you can!
Ask the doctor for a pain killer and antibiotic for her.
Keep her on soft food, the pain killer will slow her bowels ( constipate her) and that soft food will help her teeth. Lots of fluids.

Broken tooth won't hurt as bad as it looks, unless their is root exposure. Some dogs live a lifetime with them. Too bad its her adult teeth and not her baby ones.

I have actually sprayed Listerine onto my dogs gums to help with that infection. Put baby oral gel on them as well. it will make them drool more, so be careful to not let it touch their tongue.

Those gases actually stay in the body/blood stream for weeks.
Just like humans!

Good luck!

Only your vet would know for certain how safe it is to anesthetize a dog two days in a row but personally I wouldn't recommend it. However you have a real dilemma here, that broken tooth is bound to cause your dog some considerable pain if left untreated. See if the vet has alternative treatment recommendations.

Seems like the vet could have done both teeth at the same time. Sounds like he just want to get more money from you, specially since he didn't fix the worst one first.

To answer your question about anesthesia, I had a chihuahua that needed a c-section. The next day she managed to take her outer stitches out so we had to have her sewn back up. The anesthesia didn't bother her at all. What did bother her was she took out all her stitches(inner and outer ones) 2 days later. She was sewn back up again, but she died the next day. She had been thru too much for her tiny body to endure. The second time she got the stitches out, she had one of those cones on and got them out anyway.

Yes it is possible... but not a very good idea this may have an affect on its mental health.
