Perhaps they realise that they have nothing to be jolly about in the season to be jolly - people estranged from friends family or loved ones, or people who believe they have no one to share the time with, or even people with jobs that keep them away from the festivities.

There is alot of stress during the holiday season...so much is due to commercialism and shopping mania! It is so insane sometimes, and there is not enough money to buy things for everyone... so more stress! Depression is a difficult illness all by itself, and with the added stress from holiday shopping, families coming and going, (mostly going back home and leaving the parents empty nested again) A lot of times, there are sad anniversaries, such as a death of a loved one during the holiday.
My dad died 6 years ago two days after Thanksgiving... it's been really hard on me every year. He was also my Santa Clause every year for 30 years and now both holidays have been hard!
We just got notice that my husband's SSD was cut short, and for two months we'll be living on nothing... when I thought we would have money for Christmas... Now I am caught with nothing
but I guess we'll get by ok without... I've done it before! It's been really hard not being depressed lately.. it really doesn't help to feel sorry for myself... So, I just have to grin and bear it! Things will get better soon! I do know that many people are affected by the disease of depression... it is a horrible illness and takes alot of work, therapy, counseling, medication, and personal effort to get better! I have been married to a husband with some serious effects of this illness as well as quite a few others. We have been married for 7 1/2 years now... It's been quite an education!

I think so many people get so depressed over the holiday season because of several reasons. But to me, one reason that many people get so depressed is because that maybe they feel left out either by family or by friends during the holiday season.

The holidays rarely live up to our expectations thanks to all the media hype, sentimental movies, commercialism and the push for bigger, better more impressive gifts. People tend to forget the holiday season is about the spirit of Christmas- sharing what we have with those less fortunate, reaching out to people in need, giving instead of getting. That and holidays can make people who are short on friends or family feel even more alone. Another good reason to think of what you can do for others to help them have a brighter Christmas.

Some people may get depressed during the holidays because they lost a love one and they may feel all alone.

It could depend on a lot of things, maybe that person is away from their family and friends, or may have lost a relative around the holidays and don't feel like celebrating.

Because I dont have any meaningful relationships in my life to share the holidays with - I end up spending it with strangers, or people I barely know.

a lot of people get depressed because they arelonely, others because of weight, and some because it's the time of year they HAVE to spend with the obnoxious family, and some because it's the time when you're expected to spend a lot of extra money you may not necessarily have.
