I feed my cat Friskies rite now, but he's getting older and i'm worried that Friskies won't give him the nutrients he needs. I've been feeding my new kitten Iams (what his old owner fed him) and he's VERY healthy and happy. I'm thinking of a switch. Should I? Are there any other brands that are better? Why is Iams better than Friskies?

THANX!!!

Cats are obligate carnivores and as such will get more from a food made with real meat. As you can see from the ingredients list below the Iams has far superior ingredients to the Friskies. Out of the two I would choose Iams but over all I would probably look for something more natural ingredients and less preservatives.

Friskies Ingredients(Poultry Flavor):
Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, meat and bone meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn germ meal, + Additional ingredients

Iams Original with Chicken Ingredients:

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E, and Citric Acid), Fish Meal (source of fish oil), +Additional Ingredients.

I also was feeding my cat Friskies and she liked it. However, after I took her to the vet for her vaccination, my vet insisted that only IAMS was the food to feed her. He was very insistent about it, but he said to finish the Friskies and give her some IAMS with it. He said every time you change your cat's food, you should do it slowly and give her the old food that she is used to with the new food until, of course, you finish the old food.

I also spoke with the owner of my pet food store and he agrees that IAMS is much better than Friskies. However, he did say that probably my cat likes Friskies better because it tastes better. It's sort of like eating a carrot is better for you, but wouldn't you rather eat french fries?

iams is definatly better than friskies but its not that great a food either, with out having the ingrediant list in front of my i cant sight spacific reasons the eukanuba company bought iams a few years back and changed the formula so its not as good as it used to be. i would feed a food that has no corn, and no meat bi-products in it. you want the first ingredant to be something like chicken meal (not just chicken) when it says chicken it literally meens they put the entire chicken in the brinder internal parts and all, chicken meal is just the meat that you want your animal to be eating. and make sure u keep the kitten on kitten food and the older cat on something age apropreate (senior food if he's over 7).

Friskies is garbage food and Iams is one of the worst foods you can feed you animal. Iams does animal testing on their food. And not in a nice way. They force kidney failure on animals to see if their food will help, they repeatedly caused injury to dogs, causing their fur not to grow back to see if dogs with luxurious coats are more pleasant to touch than dogs with bald patches. If you want the best food for your buck, Neutro is one of the best foods out there for cats and dogs, no animal testing, very high nutrition and resonably priced. You can't get it at crap stores like Walmart or Zellers. You'll have to go to a pet food supply place like Petsmart or Pet Valu. Trust me, this food will make a huge difference in your pets!! :)

I've always heard Iams is a better brand cause they put more nutrients in it and a higher quality of food.

Another reasonably priced good food I feed my cat is Purina.

This is really a question for your vet! Does your older cat seem poorly nourished or unhealthy? Does she seem lethargic or somehow not herself? If she is generally healthy and acting like herself ----I wouldn't worry-----I might ask my vet however just to be sure.

I think the IAMs is helpful when young kittens are growing actively but after awhile then I switch to a more affordable kitty food------but I am sure there is a variety of opinions on this out there---

My choice would be IAMs if you get the one with chicen and rice and it will keep them regulated and not have loose stools. that is the one that i use when I don't get science diet. That is just my opinion. I have had many cat's most of them rescues but found that between Iam's and science diet they are the best. a little more expensive but the most nutricous. for your pet. dog or cat. God Bless you for wanting the best for your pet.

If you have a male cat be careful males can get blockage in the urethra which causes the bladder to explode, it is caused by crystals which they get by eating bad food. I would feed Iams or if you can afford more Medi Cal. Please be careful
