Our answers are foolish you say. Don't you think you are the fool to keep smoking first of all, then to expect us to give you some magical answer that will make you stop!!!!!!

I was being nice to you, but no more nice guy. Go smoke yourself to death, see if we care.

And don't come back here asking for any advice. You are ungrateful.

If nothing works, then cold turkey will have to do.
You may try stopping several times before it takes.

I smoked for over 40 years and I stopped over 1 year ago - cold turkey, because my chest xray came back with signs of lung disease, I have a slight case of emphezema and my ekg was abnormal.

I had to find a way to stop and I realize it's mind over matter and priority to my family. They want me alive.

I quit 1 1/2 years ago, a 5 pack a day habit, Pall Mall non-filtered, smoked for about 55 years.

I used the 'stretch the time between smokes' method. Do this in weekly increments. Once every 3 days might lead to a few trips to the hosp for S.O.B. (Shortness Of Breath)

I wasted somewhere between $300 and $500 on the patch, gum, Zyban, Weluburtain (sp) These won't work if your doing over 1/2 a pack a day

Ativan helps the Nic Fits

A picture that might increase the desire to quit..

I waited too long,
I now have 3 different Oxygen delivery systems
I take a small tank with me everywhere I go
I waste 1 day a week waiting for oxygen
I spent 5 weekends in the hospital because of it, at about $2000 per weekend.
I have to deal with bronchial drugs that have "side effects"
I can't breath well enough to work or have a normal sex life.
Being around smokers (second hand smoke) really hurts my chest.
Most airlines won't allow Oxygen, so I can't go see my granddaughter.
Driving is limited to about 2 hours

Keep on smoking, and maybe you will see what I mean

In study after study three things were determined.
1. You have to really be ready and committed to quitting.
2. Simply quitting cold turkey with various support such as nicotine gum and friends is the only thing that will work.
3. Most smokers quit several times before they are successful. Just because you failed once doesn't mean you'll always fail at it. Set a new quit daye and do it again.

I quit before there were things like nicotine patches or gum. It was hard but well worth it in the long run. Good luck.

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

HI Jester. You know I just quit myself 6 days ago. And damn it was hard for the first 3 days, and it got better pretty quick. I've tried the patch you name it but the only thing that will really do it is cold turkey. Just keep yourself busy and chew gum or whatever it takes but you can do it! There is no easy out for smoking cigarettes.

I have found that the times that I have attempted to quit smoking the gum helps me. I also tried Zyban which didn't help me because I was always forgetting to take them, but I hear that it has a pretty high success rate. Unfortunately I don't want to quit so I keep smoking. I found this info on a website today about quitting. It may be something to check into.

The newest anti-smoking drug to be approved by the Food & Drug Administration, Pfizer's twice-a-day prescription tablets (varenicline) are designed to block receptors in the brain that are the main culprits of nicotine addiction. The drug eases withdrawal symptoms and reduces the pleasurable effects of nicotine if someone smokes cigarettes while taking it. According to clinical trials, Chantix has a success rate of about 23 percent after one year. The approved course of the drug is 12 weeks, although patients can take it longer to increase the success rate. Side effects include nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception).

Don`t allow yourself to be around smokers. Keep alot of hard candies around your house in your purse and you could try chewing gum.Drink lots of water. Go for walks. Get into a smokers group and ask questions and get answers. I tried everything too but finally I did it and now I am nearly 3 months smoke free. Theres times when I crave a cig but when I do I croquet, work cross puzzles, or I am on Yahoo Answers. Just sometimes you have to take it one day at a time! and if you slip that`s okay. You aren` the first and surely you won`t be the last....Start again...don`t quit..I tried for 53 years and I am 3 mos clean. You can do it!!!

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

i kow how hard it is to quit smoking. I stopped for about a year cold turkey but got back to it. the best way i can suggest is cutting down little by little until u stop. (it saves alot of $$ 2!) i was up to a pack or more a day, now im at about 2 or 3 a day. there's no easy way to quit but little by little you can get over the addiction and less withdraw, which is a added bonus.

slowly cut down.... Don't quit cold turkey! that never works!! if you smoke two packs a day start spreading them out smoke only 1 pack a day for a couple weeks and as soon as you feel comfortable move down.. keep doing that until you feel comfortable with only a few and soon you'll be able to stop forever!!! Just keep cutting down until you feel uncomfortable stay at the point UNTIL you feel comfortable again cutt some more. good luck! you can also try focusing on other things... go the gym or something... replace cigarettes with coffee...
