All of the above answers are correct, except when the virus isn't caught early it develops into Epstein-Barr. That's when it can be serious, I know my daughter has Epstein-Barr. It, the mono, can be spread by casual contact with other people, drinking after people, if someone sneezes or coughs on you that has it or simply gets in your face to talk.
Epstein-Barr, when it is more serious can damage the liver, turn into Lymphoma, Leukemia, etc.. A little rest won't do, TOTAL bed rest until the virus is gone which initially should have taken weeks, now could be months. I'm talking no fast turning of the head or any movement like that will help the virus grow. No consumption of anything containing caffeine at all. It's not easy to deal with a 12 year old who drank after her 17 yr old step brother, who I now know HAD mono.

Mono--Mononucleosis is a disease of the lymphocytes ( a white blood cell) which make them look like monocytes (another white blood cell) This is caused the the Epstein Bar Virus --> EBV. it has the Signs and symptoms mentioned in some of the previous answers but basically the viruse infest the nucleus of the lymophocyte and creates it to change and swell up. Antibiotics will not treat this and it is a self limiting disease-meaning it will go away after som rest and relaxation.

they are right, is is called mononucleosis
despite what many believe though, it can be spread by basic contact, not just kissing. Kissing is the most common way to spread it though.
