I can't speak from experience on the ironing thing, I always used a blowdryer, and it did a lot of damage too ... but I can tell you, if your hair is badly damaged and the ends are splitting, the BEST thing you can do is cut those damaged ends off. Leaving them intact will make them split further and further up the strand by virtue of the tugging caused by brushing/combing, washing, touching, etc. I know if you have long hair you may not want to part with it, but you may be happier without the fried dried crisps.
As for treatments to help the hair, the best 'repair' product I've found is a Nexxus product called Emergencee. It's practically a glue for your hair. Ends that I thought were beyond help were sealed up and back to normal. Can't use it all the time, but as the name suggests, it's for emergency treatment. Follow with a hot oil treatment or other deep conditioning.

You'll have to get a trim. Not much else you can do for split ends. Just get a little trimmed off and then use some good products on the rest. I love Redken Clear Moisture. It helps my dry hair a lot. Here:

Use a clothes iron? Oh god...why the hell did u do that? The only way to get rid of the split ends is to chop it off. Take extra care of your hair, next time!

start out with a good cut. Cut the ends off. Then keep up with regular trims. There is no product that will repair your already split ends.
Good luck.

you know those ends have to go, right? they're not going to fix themselves, fuse themselves together, magically mend up all on their own.....you gotta chop them off and start from scratch. use a deep condition or treatment once a week if you flatten it everyday and make sure you're not leaving the iron on one place too long, it should be moving constantly, slowly, but constantly. and taking vitamins doesn't hurt a damn thing either. helps your hair, skin, nails, body in general. grab a bottle of centrum while you're out chopping your hair.

with split ends, you cant really fix them with products. i would suggest you go to a salon and get all the split ends cut off and start over.
