I read that it comes from wolves. When wolves used to sleep, you know, outside, they used to have to walk around in cirlcles in order to crush any uncomfortable twigs and such in order to make the place that they were about to lay more comfortable. I guess that that trait just didn't leave.

i think it's just to get their bed all set whether for a nap or for the night. My schnauzer takes the blanket or towel in her bed and picks it up and turns circles with it

instinct from thousands of yrs. ago....walking in a circle to mat down grass to make a bed....its just one of those things that held on even to this day....wolves and other wild k9s still do it to this day.......genetically imprinted in their brains...

I think that they do it to sofen and make shure that what they are about 2 lye on is safe and stuff...and to put their sent on it...like their territory in the wild
