I am 17 and I am looking to purchase a Chevy S10 pickup. Here are the details:
Price $5,500
Body Style Truck
Mileage 90,800
Exterior Color Black
Interior Color Grey
Engine 4 Cylinder Gasoline
Transmission Automatic
Drive Type 2 wheel drive - rear

The pickup looks great. Should I buy it? Is there a better pickup for a reasonable price?

As the proud owner of a 1985 Chevy, I can tell you that they are generally built far better than Dodge or Ford products, and because of the basic design, the replacement parts should be relatively easy to obtain. The engine will probably last another 70,000 miles with regular oil changes.

However, a word of caution: The major problem with the small pickup trucks is the light rear end. In other words, if you drive it in a state where there is a lot of snow, like Maine or New York, the truck will have a very difficult time getting down the highway. Generally speaking, the S 10 doesn't have ABS braking.

Also, they are prone to hydroplaning (when a vehicle slides on a wet paved road, during rain). Therefore, one would be advised to drive very very carefully while on a wet highway or street.

But outside of that, it should be a great truck! Good luck!

It is a one wheel drive vehicle unless it was a 'special order' truck with posi-a-traction rear end. Most what are called 4 wheel vehicles are only two wheel drive. A true 4 wheel drive has two differentials.
If it was a Nissan or Toyota then I would say it is probably a reasonable deal.. but a (S10) have the dealership check it out. Then after their report (if all is good) offer the person $5,000.00 cash. I would be very concerned about the front end (upper and lower ball joints, tie rods) and automatic transmission. Ask him how often the automatic Trans has been serviced in the life of the truck. Should be done every 25,000 miles. Did another young person own the vehicle or a man or woman? Each drive their vehicles differently.

its obvious that XUSAA is very opinionated away from american brand trucks for whatever reasons

those arent the type of ppl to listen to to find out facts and useful information

a good deal on a vehicle is one where you pay a resonable or better than reasonable price for a vehicle that is in sound mechnical and physical shape and has average or better mileage for the year and also that has been properly and regularly maintained,
personally i would opt for the 4.3L s-10 i have seen a few problems over the years with the 4 cylin s-10s, and that is not opinion, i have sene it personally here in town a few times, i also know many ppl with 4.3L s-10s and they have had no problems and i am talking about the 94-up ones

however my brother owns a 92 s-10 4.3L and it is wqorking on 200k miles and he has done nothing to it but beat the snot out of it and let it rust out and he doesnt maintain it and has had it for about 5 years now and it keeps on going and going, the exhaust system rotting out is the biggest issue other than once it needed a 20 dollar harness from the distributor to the coil, because the pink wire broke inside the insulation and prevented it from starting up and running, it took us a couple of months to figure that one out, the 94-up are alot better physically, and are reliable

as is almsot any vehicle if is taken well care of, but some are reliable even when they are literally beat
also i own an 88 toyota pickup with the 22RE and auto 4 speed and it has 137k miles it already neededa new timing chain tensioner and timing set and now it needs a new TPS and cold start injector time switch, and both of those parts are over 100 bucks each but it still runs and drives pretty good it will go out of town even, i consider that pretty darn good, i am no fan of foreign vehicles but i cant knock the toyotas really other than the price of the parts being really high, this thing shouldnt even stilll be running with the parts it needs, oh and i had to put new brushes in the alternator last month but that only cost 21 bucks so i did it, and the fuel guage sneidng unit rusted and froze and is junk so i just go by the low fuel light, and it did blow a rear wheel cylinder once too but that wasonly about 15 bucks and plus a set of shoes for about 18 bucks

the s-10 parts are alot cheaper, most anyways, but they hardly ever need a new part

a fuel pump, waterpump and brake parts would be really the only parts expected to ever need to be replaced on a second gen s-10 such as youre looking at

good luck

NO!!

2wd Chevy S10s with a 4cyl and automatic are a dime a dozen--for the amount you mentioned, I'd expect a 4x4 extended cab S10 with a V6

assuming you want a compact truck, stay away from Rangers (junk)--Toyota and Nissan always made great trucks, and Chevys are good--but this price is about $2000 too high

I would say no, the S10 was consistently rated last in all small pickup comparison tests. It is possibly the worst handling vehicle you can get, and the engine barely has enough power to manage highway speeds. Reliability is spotty at best (in fairness, you probably will not have major problems, but rather lots of squeaks and rattles and trim pieces coming loose), and the interior is rather poorly designed and made as well. A Toyota is the way to go, but they hold their value well and you will have to get an older one. The old Nissan Hardbody trucks are OK, and the Mazda's were pretty good before Ford got ahold of them.

90,800 is alot on the clock. You have no clue how well it was taken care of.

Ask for the maintenance receipts, if he has none, walk away. People who care meticulously for their cars (and trucks) keep these. Don't pay top dollar for a poorly maintained domestic dog.

Every car/truck needs maintenance and repairs. A year from now would you be willling to sink $1,200 into a tranny fix or a valve job?

If you're answer to yourself is "no way!", don't buy this hunk o' junk. But if you say "hell yeah!", then this is the truck for you.

Low miles for the year and it is pretty reliable as far as I know. I think it is a bit expensive for a 99, but if it is almost perfect, it would be ok.
Just 2 words: Carfax and mechanic.

For other websites www.autotrader.com I purchased my last 2 cars looking in this website.

s-10's have always been well known for their reliability. as far as price it depends on what year. if it is a second generation body style (94-04) that is a reasonable price. the four cylinder is not well known for its blazing power but is a good solid motor if you keep up on routine engine maintenance. the auto transmisions won't take a whole lot of abuse but hey its a four banger. i say go for it. you love the gas milage

all this sounds good ,,but you didn't add the year of the truck, its not a good deal if its an older truck, and the mileage can kill the sell of one ,especially it being a 4 cylinder truck,if it was the v-6 engine it would be a better deal probably but with out the year of it there's no way of knowing how good of a deal it is,,good luck i hope this help,s

whatever you do, before you buy it, pay 50 bucks and take it to a mechanic and have him give it a good look over.

Its worth it, you will find out if you will be investing alot more in the near future. Catch my drift?

get it checked so you dont get stuck with a lemon.
