1. Real therapy has nothing to do with talking to someone who lends a sympathetic ear in return for cash. It has to do with doing specific techniques, proven by research to successfully treat a mental illness. This includes treatment for depression.
2. Part of diseases like this is sabotage of treatment. That feeling that treatment is hopeless or that you couldn't do it or that it sounds like it couldn't possibly work....that's the disease specifically preventing you from getting treated.
3. The correct person to see is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. This is the legally defined and protected term for the type of doctor that can help you. Most others are frauds that haven't a clue how to do successful treatment. They use various undefined terms like therapist and psychotherapist (a janitor could hang out a shingle and call himself a "psychotherapist"...lol)
4. Treatment has a high success rate for the big three most common disorders....depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders. Because of this, it is a very good idea for you to get treated.

I know what it's like to feel alone especially when it's your family that makes you feel that way. but doctors may get paid as they also have to pay their rents and morgages too, but they went into that profession because they care. Just because someone doesn't love you, doesn't mean they don't care. Please find a doctor to help you. Or a really good friend.
All I can say is that although it doesn't seem like it right now, things will get better, and if it's your family you are mad at, don't let them win, you are stronger than that. Show them you are.
you'll be ok.

I know it can be frustrating finding some serious answers on this site, however I think unfortunately that you would have to discuss with a doctor. It might be that you are lacking some nutrients or some health related condition or just simply stress or an attention disorder. It is hard to answer because having problems functioning may mean very different things. Do you have trouble concentrating or do you feel extremely tired? Does this affect your whole life or just certain aspects of your life?

If you are having trouble functioning you probably do need more than self-help. I was able to get free counseling thru a church. One of the pastors was a licensed therapist. I can imagine other organizations do something similar. How badly do you want to feel better? On your own you can do things with your diet, sleep and excercise. Adding fish oil supplements helps me lessen mood swings. But again, if you are feeling so down you cant get yourself up, its unlikely that you will have the gumption to do a lot and need to ask someone for free help.

It's interesting that you don't want a counselor, saying they are paid to listen and don't care about you, but would trust advice from a group of anonymous people who may or may not know what they're talking about.
You've taken the first step--you've asked for help. Now it's up to you to ask for help from someone who can really help you, and I do believe that that's a counselor.
Not all counselors are paid, and not all can/will give you medicine. And they do care (otherwise why go into the profession?); and as they get to know you they will care about you.

Those ducks of yours that are supposed to be in a row are now milling around. I had severe bi polar depression and had thought about suicide many times because I felt so detached from everyone and everything. I realized that I felt so terrible over things I could control. I stopped taking my zoloft and xanex and decided that i needed to be a stronger person. I hated the way i felt. i was always HO HUM. It took me a while to get used to not having the meds and I had to deal with the problems as they arose. Don't feel detached, detach yourself from the problems.Know who your friends are and don't be afraid to take a risk and meet new people.

Why don't you go to the book store and look up the section you think would apply, like mental health, or self help, go and explore, there are a lot of answers there, and steps to help you get to where you want to be, Good luck my love.
