Staple them on, that's what I saw the guys at a hotel doing. The trunk is has a thick fiberous covering and won't be harmed. Don't put the staples in too hard, don't want to short the wire.

We did this for our wedding. it is a pain in the ***! It took two of us. One person got on the ladder with a staple gun and the other person walked around the base of the tree withthe ball of lights guiding them around the trunk. The person stapling will get poked by the pokies a lot. My poor husband was all cut up! It was worht it though- it looked beautiful!

like the last guy said staple them on.... my grandma has the man that cuts her palm put them up.... well they are up there and he will just check them for her to make sure they still work, and whala, we got lights on a palm during christmas!!! :o)
