I remember that....I was watching when it happened and IT WAS TO PROTEST SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN. You are correct about that. It's just typical religious hypocrisy. You'd think people would have learned by now.

True, true, but anytime an entertainer (even a modest one like O'Connor) uses their celebrity to push a personal agenda, people take offense. Look at what happened to Tom Cruise.
Why is this? Because people watch entertainers to be ENTERTAINED, to be distracted from the harsh realities of life, not to have their eyes opened to the stark cruelness that is humanity. It's like a bait and switch. Even if their points are valid, once you've been deceived, you lose respect for the person making the point.
Entertainers fill an important role in society, and that is to dull the sharpness of the everyday world. If they feel the need to bring that sharpness into their acts, they should quit entertainment and take up politics, like Arnold Schwarzenegger did.

because her statement was so strong they(the media and the world) wrote her off as crazy, i think if she would have done something a little milder and continued to speak about the abuse in a milder manner, she may have been more of a help. unfoutunately when people act strongly in any way the mdia has a way of making people look crazy! Look at what they did to Howard Dean!

You're probably too young to have been watching the episode. But she didn't rip the picture to protest against sexual abuse, it was a protest against religion completely. Maybe now since she's a wash up, she might be changing her claim, but thats what the ripping of the picture was.

I'm almost positive that that's not why she ripped up the picture on SNL. Hang on. I'm checking it out.
EDIT:
I'm sorry, apparantly you're right. I always thought that she did it to protest Catholic power abuse in Northern Ireland. I stand corrected.
Thanks for pointing this out.

Because people refuse to believe the truth. They would rather live in their safe little fantasy world and pretend that the world isn't a pile of shite, regardless of why she ripped it.

Imagine that... people got mad at the pretty bald lady after she ripped up the Pope's picture. Who'd a thunk it?
Maybe if she had brought up the topic in an intelligent manner, she'd have gotten an intelligent response.

Because thats not the way to get the messaage across. If a baby throws a temper tantrum, best thing is to ignore it. My best guess.
I am only guessing cuz u asked. Personally I have never been better since leaving Catholic church.
