Electric is the most viable fuel, and can be sourced by any number of renewable primary fuels.
It is only unusual because the major car makers crushed their electric vehicles (ev's).

Electric motors provide much better torque characteristics than infernal combustion enegine (ice) so can out perform ferraries etc and provide a quiet, smooth, smell free, stress free driving experience
battery range is now >250 miles per charge, and nano technology promises 40 year lifetimes and 30minute recharges; but there is little subsidy for research.

I believe I saw this on Yahoo News (the science section) a couple of months ago... There is a guy in Vermont who invented a way to use potatoes as fuel for cars. To find it try googling either potato car fuel or trash car fuel, or compost car fuel. I believe it was potatoes though. It sounded really cool.
