im 17 and have had to deal with minor acne problems. is my red from the acne medicine?

It sounds like rosacea. The skin on your face is more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body and it is exposed to more chemicals, sun, extreme temperatures, allergens and stress. The ointment you are applying to your face might be aggravating the redness, but natural things like spicy foods, your face blushing/flushing or exercise can irritate it too. It is common in fair skinned people and often hereditary.
A dermatologist can give you some meds to treat the redness. If you're buying acne medicine off the shelf, there's even a chance that the acne you're experiencing isn't acne but papules (or symptoms of the rosacea). Either way, the dermatologist will give you calming and healing lotions/ointments that wont irritate your skin. Often they recommend lotions that are blue in color because the blue takes the reddish edge off your complexion.
