the simple subject is basically what the sentence is talking about. for instance: The four children walked in the park.
the subject is "the four children", but the simple subject is "children". another example: mrs. robertson took her dog for a walk. mrs. robertson is the subject. mrs. robertson is the simple subject too.

you find the simple subject in each sentence by asking who? or what? before the verb. the following is an example:
I will do my homework. so how would you find the simple subject? find the verb first--will do is the verb. so who? or what? will do? I will do, right? so I is the subject.
a simple subject is the person or thing that does the action. here are more examples:
we mopped the floor. (We is the subject. mopped is the verb)
can Sally finish shopping before 5 pm? (Sally is the subject. can finish is the verb)
please wash the dishes. (understood "you" is the subject. wash is the verb)
how beautiful the sunset looks! (sunset is the subject. looks is the verb)
hope these helped... :)
