3|y| = 27
|y| = 27/3 = 9

now |y| is not a normal function that can be used in an equation ... so square it ...
|y| also known as mod(y) squared is y^2

y^2 = 9^2 = 81
y = +9 or -9

if y squared is 81, y is either 9 or -9

YEAH, it is 9.

3y simply means 3 'times' y.

when you bring it to the other side, the symbol changes to 'divided by'.

so it'll be...

y = 27 'divided by' 3

which is 9.

Is lyl meant to be one variable? If so, you are correct.
