Should a ten year old be allowed to own a cell phone? Just because we see little kids with cell phones on TV?

it is ridiculous to get a cell phone for a ten year old. theyre still in elementary school!!! getting them a cell phone at that age is only going to introduce them to the texting craze and encourage them not to pay attention in class.
im 17 and i couldnt get a cell phone until i could pay for it myself. whatever happened to that theory of thought?

I think the only time a child should have a cell phone is when they reach an age that they go off on their own. Even then I would make sure that there were alot of restrictions. The cell would be purchased so I can get hold of my kid, not for overly social use.

I think that if they earn it then yes they should be aloud to have a sell phone if you have a kid who makes honorroll and stays out of trouble and for the most part does what their told then YES! Make sure their responsible and mature there is a new type of cell phone out where parents can track their kids DISNEY MOBILE you might have heard about it that means that the phone could also be for protection.


It is your job as a parent and your dicsion on if you think your child is responsible enough. Hope you decide wisely parents.

But my opinion is yes a 10 yr old can have a cell phone.

i got one when I graduated Elementery School. I use it because now Im in Middle School and I call my frieds to talk and not just for Homework and "Playdates". I use my cell and pretty much never my home. Some of my friends only know my Cell #. I think 11 is a great age. In Middle School I bring my phone cuz once my bus got stuck and we were 30 min. late getting home and my mom was freaking out and called my neighbor (Has daughter my age ) who had her cell and called her. I also use it to tell my mom where I am when riding bikes, shes late for picking me up, and if My door locked me in. It is really useful and it was a great age. My sister got hers the same time as me and never uses it. ( We're 14 months apart) But over the summer she did. Once shes in Middle School next Year Im sure she'll use it. So wait a yeatr or two till Middle School

That is not a good reason to give a child a cell phone. Try another reason. Personally I don't believe that children need a personal cell phone. I don't have a cell phone. Why should any child of mine have one? But hey, it's your child. Do you want your child to have that responsibility? Do you want to pay for it?

Your best bet is if you do want to get your child a cell phone, get them a pre-paid phone because this way you will be able to monitor there usage of the phone, and how many minutes they waste, it is better than getting a plan were if they are irresponsible and overuse their minutes it will hurt your wallet...So if you want to invest in a cell phone you should definitely get them a pre-paid phone.

I dont think a 10 year old should have a cellphone. I think parents should wait until they're child can hold a job and is responsible enough for a cellphone. I think they should pay for their own bill. Thats what I had to do, and that's what I plan on doing w/ my children. I think 10 is too young of an age.

its a big trend the kid probably needs a boost of self esteem buy him a cheap,afforddable one from verizon and add your number,911 and the fire dept. number in your area my son got a cell when he was 10
