My fiance enlisted in the air force but has been told he will be entering as an "Open E.T" I know that ET stands for Electronic Technician. But what does it mean to be "open"? The way we understood his recruiter we think it means that he won't know his training program until after he completes BMT. It's very confusing and vague.

Will this affect his chances on moving up in the air force?

Most are recruited with a specific occupation assigned before basic, however they can go to basic and then be assigned to whatever they need after training. They all have quotas in each occupation type. The one he originally wanted(if he had one in mind) might be full or maybe he didn't select one. In which case they will assign one.

That is correct he has been enrolled in the general field of Electronic Technician but he will not be placed till basic . this will depend on the needs of the AF and his score on the ASVAB. Good luck

it means you are going to the electronics technicians school and after you swear in and get to bootcamp to talk to the career officer, he is going to put you in the job of ET-a, Et-b, ET-c, or ET-d, all the way up to probably ET-x.
the jobs they give you in the airforce, they only give you a techschool career and place you in whatever job that requires that AT-school.
in other words, you don't have as much choice as you thought you did, but thanx for serving!
