Okay, I am a groomer, so....I wouldn't really consider some of the other opinions on here. Everyone who owns a dog thinks they are an expert.

Most dogs need grooming every 4-8 weeks. That sounds like a big range, but it depends on your dog's coat: length, texture, and growth rate. If your dog gets dirty, wash it. Other than that, go with the grooming guidelines that are recommended for your pet. Dogs that require regular haircuts will be washed when they go to the groomer's, and if you are regular, there is no need for you to do it yourself.

If you have dogs like labs, they should get a bath every 10-12 weeks. But it depends on a lot of factors, like how much time they spend outdoors and the like.

Cats take care of their own hygiene. They don't need to be bathed unless they get into something.

A dog should not be given a bath more than once every two months or you can strip the natural oils out of their coat and create a worse problem (such as dry skin).

You should never give your cat a bath unless it gets muddy or otherwise filthy dirty. Cats keep themselves clean.

Dogs only need to be bathed about once every 3 months, unless they get filthy in the interim. Washing them too often can destroy the oils in their skin and ruin their coat.

I've never bathed my cats, as they tend to do quite a good job of keeping themselves clean.

As for dogs, I never bathed them without reason. If their odor was strong, if they rolled in something they shouldn't, or if they went swimming in the bayou.

Or fleas.
Other than that, I wouldn't suggest bathing any animal more than 1-2 times monthly...and most animals won't need that often, either.

I have 4 cats..we do "spa day" maybe once or twice a year at the most...esp. during the summer to help get rid of extra fur...and to cool them off...wouldn't wash them at this time a year because its so easy for them to get cold...their skin can dry out so easily..so once a month is a no no...dogs are different...some really get smelly and depends if they roll around outside...maybe once a month..and again..skin dries out easily..so use a really good shampoo for doggies...

I would say every month, at the most. But remember, use shampoo that is made specifically for cats and dogs. People shampoo isn't good enough(in most cases)
