The depo provera shot, commonly referred to as the 'depo shot', is a birth control shot you get at your doctor's office three to four times a year (I don't remember which) What the shot actually does is prevent you from ovulating, which in turn prevents you from getting pregnant (no egg to be fertilized) which also stops your menstrual period. (although for some women I believe it is common to still have some spotting) I've heard that weight gain is common also, although I never experienced that myself when I was on it.
I'd say it's a good option for birth control....especially if you're not good at remembering to take a pill every day or don't want any sort of invasive procedures performed.

Well with all of the answers before mine I will just add that I have given the injection to Patients and IT has affects on many different people it just depends on your body and how it reacts to the drug, I was at one time thinking of getting on it, But I notice with some females it made them gain weight which was something I did not want, Some say it made their cycle go away which I would loved that but how would I know if I were ever pregnant, And others have stated that it messed their period up. So again It depends on the person's body, You want know until you try, if you like it then you stay on it, If not GET OFF. Take Care your Medical Assistant

I took it for about a year. I had horrific migraines, hair loss, almost constant bleeding and terrible cramping the whole time. I have talked to alot of others who had the same side effects. It was a very bad experience for me. I would choose pills or some other form of birth control.

I have been on this drug for 4 years now and it is amazing. I don't even get a period anymore. Youget one shot every 3 months. Don't have to worry about taking a stupid pill every day. It may however decrease your sex drive as it is used in larger doses on people convivcted of major sex crimes to decreasew thier sex drive.
