48 bcos 24 are sleeping and 8 play with 2 each = 16 kittens for 8 kittens. 16+8= 24 kittens are awake. so 24 sleeping and 24 awake= 48 kittens

Going along with spider's idea...
24 sleeping + 8 playing + 3 kitten (words) = 35.
The "with 2 kittens" might be just to mislead, since if they form a circular chain, those 8 kittens can play with its 2 neighboring kittens...
