I am from Eastern Canada, and I've met many people visiting Canada from the States and I can't believe that they are surprised that we don't live in igloos, have pet beavers, and that it snows all year round. Prince Edward Island, located in eastern Canada has beaches that are nationally ranked as some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I'm not at all angry or anything about the stereotypes, I'm just curious anout why people believe them.

Ignorance. Its interesting though, because a lot of American's don't even know a whole lot about their own country. Which is pretty sad. We are taught American history in our high schools, and the majority of schools in the United States teach only American history. Its basically just ignorance. Annoying though I agree

Education.....education........
Need to get used to it on this site............
Please be friendly and help educate them......
I understand how frustrating it is and hard for me to NOT be
rude but its only some people, just skip over the true fools what is the point?
You are only getting upset for nothing because people like that exist everywhere , just go to other sites and see.. they get the same thing...
Last week one person asked if Canada was a city........
That made my day and just goes to show.........
So, chin up, relax and have fun learning and teaching others about our great country! That is what this Q&A is really all about
The world has opened up and now our chance to tell everyone about Canada!!
Do not forget there are ignorant people everywhere and by using the net they believe they can say whatever they want....and do.....free speech and all.
They NEED an education........so lets get going...........
Take care.......

Same reason we are at 'war' in Iraq. A lot of ignorance and people living on the sound bite instead of questioning and using the internet for some real research. I don't think the average person wants to learn much about the world further than their nose or the TV. :)

The only people i have EVER heard those sterotypes coming from is Canadians that spread them around about "stupid americans". Have never heard any of that from Americans at all.
I hear far more stereotypes about americans from canadians than vice versa. Seems to be a national past time, coming up with new ways to dis the neighboring country. although when confronted, every canadian I talk to denies feeling that way. Odd, LOL.

The biggest problem is Americans live inside their own little world and dont venture much outside the box.

There are stereotypes about every country:
Brits - bad teeth
Americans - stupid and fat
Candians - live in igloos and say 'eh'
French - arrogant and eat cheese
Germans - nazis
Spanish/Mexicans - lazy
Don't worry about it, no intelligent people believe in them.

I agree with a few others that have answered. When you dont know any better; you believe what you hear. I've seen people come here in parkas and ski equipment in July. (NW Ontario)
