I'll third that - I've been making dumplings for years & Bisquick works great. However, Bisquick is also loaded w/ unhealthy crap and if you want to go the purist route, buy some fresh buttermilk and follow this recipe:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk

Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the shortening. Add the buttermilk, stirring with a fork until moistened. Knead the dough 4 to 5 times (never done), and pat to 1/2-inch pieces and drop into boiling broth (I do not pat it out, just pinch off pieces). Reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook for about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Here's a recipe if you want to make your own...

"Dumplings" - 8 to 10 dumplings

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. shortening
3/4 cup milk

Measure flour, baking powder and salt into bowl. Cut in shortening thoroughly, until mixture looks like meal. Stir in milk.
Drop dough by spoonfuls onto hot meat or vegetables in boiling stew. (Do not drop directly into liquid.) Cook uncovered 10 minutes. Cover; cook about 10 minutes longer or until dumplings are fluffy.
(If using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt.)
VARIATIONS:
Cheese Dumplings: Add 1/4 cup shredded sharp cheese to flour mixture.
Parsley, Chive or Herb Dumplings: Add 3 tbsp. snipped parsley or chives or 1/2 tsp. dried herbs (sage, celery seed or thyme) to flour mixture.

Belive it or not,I have tried many methods and Bisquick is still the easiest and best dumpling I've tried so far. Make sure to drop into boiling water or sauce and cover immediately.

A great place to find a dumpling recipe or any other recipe is: Uncle phaedrus, Finder of Lost recipes (www.hungrybrowser.com).
This a favorite site of mine. This guy will help you find any recipe, and he has tons of them on the site. If you have a dish that you know the name of, an old family dish that you can't remember how to make, then this is your guy. I have never been disappointed with this.

Load up a car full of lings drive into the country. Tell them you think you have a flat tire, ask them to check. When their all out of the car haul butt! I use this method all the time and it always works. Silly little lings. Don't forget the Bisquick to lure them into the car.

My aunt used to use the canned biscuits, cut them into fourths, and then drop them into the soup and cover quickly, they were always good, and they were always fast too.
