This was $22 dollar filetted Porterhouse - so I decided I'd take my chances... It was defrosted all right and smelled as though it was on its way gone bad.. Eww, that smell, was there, but not very very strong... This is what common sense told me to do.. That smell and slime is bacteria - so I rinsed the meat in cold cold water over and over a few times... Got rid of the surface slime and the mild stench.. Then I put my usual rub on it and on the grill it went... Heat kills any remaining bacteria... Guess, what it tasted deliscious and I never got sick.. That was 2 days ago... So, just wanted to share what I found out.. Just wash it with cold and grill it.. It will be fine... Comments?

Oh no, I hope people on here aren't really going to take this as "advice"!!
Everyone's stomach reacts differently to bacteria, and MOST people would likely have gotten sick from your steak!
And if a pregnant woman were to eat some, though she may not become sick herself, the bacteria could pass through the placenta and damage or even kill her unborn baby.
Bacteria growing on raw meat is serious, you shouldn't take chances. Okay, do what you want yourself, but if you're cooking for someone else have the decency to properly prepare the food and don't take the risk of making yourself or someone else REALLY REALLY ILL!!!

You got lucky. Don't fool yourself about that. You could probably do this a few times and be fine, but you will catch it eventually. But until then, good job. Personally, if meat is slimy, or smells off I get rid of it. Then again, I like my meat rare or med-rare, so cooking it probably would kill all the bacteria in my case.

I knew a butcher once that found some steaks behind a table in his shop that he said were over a month old. He said he scraped the green fricken mold off and they were the best, most tender steaks he ever ate.

So I believe you...but won't try it unless desperate.
