Definitions:
English-system of beliefs
Latin-to tie or bring together
greek-to divide and conquer
I notice the authenticity of all of these definitions to the easy answer of "that is what a religion truly is". I am religous and follow a different doctrine than most. To me, religion means a path for you to follow to reach a peacefull place of rest either for this life or to the next. To reach a higher consciousness of not being the all supreme. That no matter what, you can never be the MOST HIGH. I think that was the basis of all religions. A moral conduct involved. But without, it can have a devastating consequence on not only you(meaning self and your outcome) but the globe in truth. As the earth bears true witness. Even religions that ones who don't give thought would claim does not a have a GOD are just giving false witness. Buddhism for example. Buddha is an avatar of Vishnu. Whom is defined as supreme reality. Religion is actually a very beautifull thing only for those who choose to look beyond the people, places, and things involved in that religion to see the majesty of GOD that exists within it. But never ignore the ones who brought those religions upon the globe(abraham-pbuh, moses-pbuh, buddha, hallie sallasie, muhammad-pbuh, etc). For of the peacefull ones, they "all" had it correct. And that is for all religions that are of peace and not supremecy. Religion to me is a code of conduct for you to follow and you must be prepared to reap the consequances of the path you walk on if wrong. Because when the lights get turned off and you meet THE GOD, it is no laughing matter. Nor is HE something to mock. Religion is a thing for makind to purify, but it seems that manikind is failing severely on this task. If they can't handle this situation, how can they handle what they know not? PEACE!

Religion was a method to keep people under check similar to what a paper weight does to the papers. Our fore fathers formulated certain rules to be met in order to behave as a society or a group.
But these days the religion seems to be hijacked by some individuals and they are enforcing ridiculous rules on comman man.
To me religion is what make us belive we are humans. And a true religion always works for the betterment of human race.

By Steve A. Hamilton
Introduction: Religion is defined as “the service and worship of God... commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance” [Webster]. Perhaps more specifically, it’s “the service or practice that stems from conviction” [Billy Moore].
Religion may be sincere or insincere; true or false; rewarding or vain (Matt. 15:9; Jas. 1:26-27).
What does your religion mean to you? Has it made a difference in your life?
I. It ought to give a sense of direction.
A. What direction are we taking? Two choices: the way of the world or the way of Christ (John 15:19; Jas. 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).
B. We all want the best for ourselves. We want good health, nice homes, a happy family, a sense of security. But at what cost (Matt. 16:24-27; Mark 8:34-38)? Are any of these good things worth pursuing at the neglect of Christ?
II. It ought to mean purity of life.
A. Example: Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2). She was demon possessed; yet, she became a diligent servant. She was at Christ’s crucifixion (Matt. 27:56). She anointed the body of Christ (Matt. 27:61); and she was the first to see the risen Savior (Mark 16:9).
B. Example: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:2-10). Notice verse 8. He considered others before himself.
C. We must likewise become pure in our lives (Titus 2:11-14).
1. Our hearts are purified in obedience to God’s truth (1 Pet. 1:22; Acts 15:9).
2. Our very thoughts should be good and pure (Phil. 4:8).
III. It ought to give us a spirit of victory.
A. There is a paradox here:
1. We become victorious by surrendering your life (Gal. 2:20).
2. If you give up your life, you will find it (Mark 8:35).
3. If we put Christ first, He will take care of us (Matt. 6:33).
4. Even Christ demonstrated this in His own words (Luke 22:42).
B. We can be victors over sin and evil (1 John 5:4; 1 Cor. 15:57).
IV. It ought to define our lives.
A. It’s our reasonable service and it is what the Lord expects from us (Rom. 12:1-2; Rom. 6:16).
B. Even our thoughts should reflect those things written in the Bible (1 Cor. 4:6).
Conclusion: What does religion mean to you? It ought to give you direction in life, it ought to mean purity, it ought to mean victory over sin of this world, it ought to define our very being. But is that what religion is to you? Do others even think of you as religious? If not, you now have an opportunity to turn your life around.

Religion is where one goes to find eternal meaning in life and the answers to life's toughest questions like "what happens when I die" What is the nature of God?" "What is the Nature of Man" and other such questions. The point for life is not to just have fun, because fun can be construed as many horrible things like wanton sexual parties and excessive drunkeness (I am not against alcohol. use in moderation) However one will find that Christianity answers them all quite well. If you would like e-mail me for a copy of my essay on the My Christian Worldview. I would be happy to send you a copy and answer any questions that you have.

I think one's view on religion really is shaped by childhood experiences, so the exposure or lack of exposure can bring meaning to a person later in life who begins to define him or herself.
In my opinion: religion, like anyting else in history, has been abused and given itself a bad name. However, I think religion does not automatically denote organized religion. I think that it can be both a personal as well as collective experience of embracing spirituality and reaching new levels of self-actualization.

personally, its a hope to continue after this life, and a hope that our achievements in this life mean something
on a bigger scale, it gives life purpose. i have tried, and i have failed to give life meaning without some form of religion.
however, sometimes it all seems like a big scam and a "waste of time" because its not tangible, but its a good investment, because even if there is a 1/million chance (people gamble with less chances) that it exists, ill take it because otherwise life has no meaning, and if there's a hell, why not take a littel bit of time every day to believe in a heaven?

Religion is a practice that I like to tie to my spirituality. By practicing a particular religion, I can fellowship with others that have the same beliefs and get a better understanding of the teachings of my spiritual preferences. Religion and spirituality can exist separately.

I'm a athiest. The word religion to me means believes that a person lives their live by. I regard athiest and agnostic as religions because people who are a those have believes that they live live by they just don't believe in a 'god'.
Like me i believe that we are all here for a reason but we aren't powerful enough to understand why and we should all respect and get along with each other. We should enjoy our life as much as possible.

Everyone thinks they are in the right religion, some fight , hate others religion. But, what I ascertain is God works in them all, and that you truly don't need to be in a religion to communicate with God......... God Jesus is the true religion.

religions are the main problem in this world....islam, christianity and jews.....no one is applying religion in the right way..all the people seem to choose whatever they like from their religion and ignore the other things that their religion states...all religions talk about accepting other people's beliefs and respecting that...yet no one does that....people are using religion as a way or an excuse to disrespect other people and fight one another....i am just 19..i dont practice any sort of religion and never will...i believe in god and i know whats wrong and whats right...i respect other people's beliefs.....stop using religion as a way to hate one another......apply it correctly...and stop doing propagandas and spreading false information about other religions...accept people for who they are...
