A lot depends on your formal diagnosis, and whether the Social Security Administration is recognizing anxiety as a disability at this time (since there seems to be lapses in recognition for certain disorders). You will probably have to undergo evaluations and reviews in order to determine your eligibility, and some of their determination may be based on your age and work history.

Honestly, do not be surprised if you're denied and are forced to appeal. I've seen that happen many times. If you are sincerely disabled by your anxiety, then following up with the appeal will be worth it in the long run. Also, consult a disability attorney if you can. They can help you navigate the paperwork and such.

If you haven't been formally diagnosed, or if you are not undergoing treatment, those things may work against you, just for your information.

Hi there,

It used to be the case that when you could claim for incapacity, just a doctor's sick note would do and a lengthy explanation to the Department of social security of how your illness or disability affects you from having a job.

That was ten years ago!

Today, things are very complicated, but you can get income support for anxiety but not disability or any incapacity benefits. For disability allowance, you need to to have severe physical disabilities that prevent you from moving about or something that really prevents you from working.

The only benefit you could get is income support at around £130 a fortnight. I used to get this two years ago because I too have anxiety and depression but have worked full time for two years since this time, so don't know how much it would be now?

They are very eager to get people back into work and your reasons have to be very strong. You will have to thoroughly detail exactley how your anxiety affects you as you already know but to put a lot of emphasis upon panic attacks you might have. The more you put the better and get long-term sickness notes from your doctor to support what you suffer.

So, the answer is no, you can't get disability unless blind or crippled or in a wheelchair or have a physical condition which affects movement and co-ordination. It never used to be this way but in the last ten years things have changed drastically. You will only get income support and that is not that much more than job seekers allowance.

I hope I have helped, but wish you luck in sorting it all out and it does take some weeks, so you might be waiting for seven to eight weeks for income support to come through, but it will be back-dated from the date of your claim.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life
