Be there for him and listen. Talk and suggest that he get professional help. Let him know that you will stand by him and help him any way that you can. Let him know how concerned you are and that you are afraid for him. Help him to help himself by getting help. Good luck.

Try research cutting a bit. If you have an understanding of what your friend is going though, your friend will be more receptive to your help. There is a lot misconceptions about why people cut tthemselves. Your friend probably feels very alone right now and frigthened by his actions. You should let him know h eis not alone and a lot of people have gone through this and encourage him to get help. You can also help him think of other things he can do to cope.
My best friend was a cutter and with counseling she was able to find other ways to cope with her depression and anxiety.
By the way, that's awesome you want to help your friend

If you're a minor, you need to let his parent(s)/ guardian know. It sounds hard and I'm sure he won't like the idea, but it will be best in the end. Express your concern and try to help him find positive alternatives for dealing with emotion. This , too, is hard, but he could seriously hurt himself. Best of luck to both of you!
