Wait until you get here to buy one. Cell phones are easily lost here and it's better to pay the cheaper Chinese price than to shell out mega-bucks for something online. Also, there are some great Chinese brands that act like name brands at a fraction of the cost.

I recommend you to by a cell after you arrive there. Because the frequency in China is different from it in US. American cell phones can not be used in China

I don't know where you are, but the problem is, if you buy a phone online, you won't be able to read or write SMS in Mandarin. And here in China it is helpful. You are right it must be unlocked.

If possible I would try to get one after you get there, there is a big selection and the prices are pretty competitive. And the best thing is you can be sure that it will work in China!

in the US i use cingular...so I got a world phone for my regular plan and before I left for china, i called and told them that I needed the code to get my phone unlocked b/c i was going overseas for a few months and that i purchased a world phone for that particular reason. the next day i was emailed a special code to enter into my phone to unlock it. when i arrived in china i bought a SIM card, put it in my unlocked cingular world phone and immediately had a new phone number (local in beijing) and was ready to go.

If you have a Tri-Band GSM Phone, you can easily get Pre-Paid SIM cards when you get into China and will be a lot cheaper
