I was thinking of doing volunteer work, helping elderly people, as I enjoy helping people and find them interesting to talk to. Where is a good place to look, and do I need to take classes or have certifcations.

Hi. You are right that working with the elderly is an enjoyable and interesting experience. I've been a speech pathologist with that population for 12 years and still love it. Don't worry about qualifications, most places you would sign up with will have a volunteer program that will orient you and make sure you have all the qualifications that they require. Usually this includes some medical and vaccination info, confidentiality agreements, knowledge of universal infection precautions, etc. They will train you if you aren't already. The most important thing is to be willing to listen, be respectful and be yourself. Call your local hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, adult day cares, assisted living centers, etc for opportunites. You could just go to socialize or you could start a program involving a hobby or interest you have. If you enjoy it they will too. Best of luck. PS I got interested in my career by volunteering in a nursing home in high school.

You generally don't need anything to volunteer. It depends on the organization you wish to help though. They would most likely ask you to fill out a form needing ID and home address, phone number, ect. Sometimes places will offer training free of charge if they deem it suitable.

A good place to seek would be hospitals, nursing homes, or local apartments built for the elderly. Hope this helps. Good luck!

There are tons of places who need you. Check out www.rmhc.org for the closest 1 in your area. There are also nursing homes, hospitals, etc. You will need to get a crimminal background check for most places and possibly a child abuse clearance too. Each place will probably have their own training classes too. Good Luck and Happy Volunteering. We need more people like you in this world.
