a tail is DOCKED not clipped. Not trying to make you feel dumb I just like using the correct terminology. Now, the tail is docked between the 2-4 day of life. At this time, the nerve ending in the tail are not fully active and not fully connected to the spine and in turn the brain. In other words, they don't feel the loss. Anything after this time frame, I would suggest leaving it as is because again, the nerve endings. Also, the pain for the dog is multiplied depending on its age. Some vets will still do it after this time frame but not many. I've seen a couple Rotts with their tails in tact and it doesn't look too bad. Its heavy but not too bad.

Oh, and the "its only cosmetic" quote is not entirely true. The purpose for docking tails was to prevent attackers from grabbing the tails and ears of dogs while in battle or fighting. The reason it is still done is because many of the same breeds are still doing the same work as back then... protection work.

A dog should be docked at a few days of age. Any later and it will be very painful.

Chances are if the pup is a few weeks old then it will grow to adulthood and have no problems with a long tail. Ask a vet and see what they think.

In some countries, tail docking has been outlawed and the results have not always been good for the dogs. A study was done in Sweden of German Shorthaired Pointers who did not get their tails docked. By the time they group being studied was 2 years old, 35 percent had suffered a tail injury. Injuries ranged from hard-to-heal wounded, bloody tips to broken tails. Some tails needed to be amputated. A similar study of wirehaired pointers has similar results.

Tail docking is NOT cosmetic for hunting dogs.

3 to 5 days after birth.. After that, the nerves are developed and it becomes a major amputation with an extremely high risk of complications.... pain, infection, meningitis. It's cosmetic anyway, so I say live with the tail : )..... PS: anyone who tells you that you can dock tails with a rubber band is an IDIOT.

OK.... it's cosmetic for house dogs.... I was assuming that this was not meant to be a working dog due to the language used in the question : )

2-3 days after birth. After that it is painful for the pup. Most vets will not do them much after that. Docking their tails is not a necessity it is cosmetic surgery. Boxers are not having their tails docked as much any more either.

it doesnt unless there is a medical reason for it. people do this just for looks. My Jack Russell, another dog where tails are cropped, does not have hers cut. Its all a looks thing not and not needed unless it's a medical reason to do it.
