where's the best place to stay in new york before christmas?

last time we stayed near 51st (the waldorf astoria). We always had to jump on the rail to go anywhere. This time I want to stay somewhere fun where we can walk more. Any ideas?? i've only been once so any tips will help! :)

the mariott is a good central location and has a revolving restaurant that overlooks the city.
