What does he want to do with the knife? If he is an outdoorsman that enjoys camping, hiking, and/or hunting/fishing a good fixed blade hunting knife would be good. If it will be for everyday use, a good folding pocket knife would be good. Keep knife blade lengths in mind. Some large blade folders can be considered weapons. The wimps in charge where I work have recently forbid any knives with blades in excess of 2"....yes, I said two inches.
I think you can find a good folder at Wal-mart for under $10-15 dollars. There are several good names....Buck, Schrade, Old timer, Old henry. Generally, if it is made in America, it's going to be a good knife.
Also, you may consider a multi-tool. Leatherman is the standard by which all other multi-tools can be judged. Be careful of cheap multi-tools...they are not worth the time of day. Stick with Leatherman, Schrade, Sog, Gerber, or Channelox. That is about it. A good multi-tool will run from $30 to $60 dollars. I think Buck might offer a multi-tool. I would not be afraid to buy a buck multi-tool.
Good luck.

Buck is actually a brand name, they make mostly hunting knives, some are folding, some fixed. Buck is a pretty good quality brand, you can find them at most sporting good stores that sell hunting equipment. I'd say their prices range from $20 (for a very small one) to $100+

Buck is the brand name. They make a very high quality blade. Choose a style (hunting, folding, fishing etc.) that he says he wants. They make lots 25 - $250. Most places that carry knives will have Buck knives too. Even Wal-Mart

Buck is a company name, like Coke it has been used to describe hunting knives. The best knives have a fixed blade (they don't close) and are made of carbon steel not stainless steel. Price's will vary from $40-100 for a good one.

Buck is the brand. As for what kind to get him, it depends on what he's going to use it for. If he's going to use it on deer, get him one with a guthook. If he's just wants one to carry as a pocket knife, get him one with a drop point blade. If you get him a hunting knife, you can either get a fixed blade, or folding knife. If you are just getting him a pocket knife, get him a lock blade.
