My friend just came back from Japan and believe it or not Karate is really not that popular there currently. The young people there could be less concerned with the martial arts a a whole.
It is kind of included in there gym classes but this is not traditional training as I know it.

Yes, girls do karate and every other martial art in Japan. Naginatado is generally thought of as a "ladies only" martial art, but there are male exponents as well.

Everyone does karate in Japan. Its like basketball here. You might not be Micheal Jordon, but chances are you could dribble, know the rules, and might even be able to shoot. Thats how Karate is in Japan, they teach it in gym class. I once asked a Japanese man if he knew martial arts, he said no, a few seconds later, he busted into Kata. By his standards he didnt know martial arts, but he knew the rules, could dribble and might even have been able to shoot.

I suspect yes, but I have no facts about it. If you asked Ninjutsu... yes there are female Ninjas... known as Kunuchi.
