I started marching bass drum for about a month now. However I have only actually marched with it about 6 times... I've stood and practiced a lot more, but for the most part it creates a crippling back pain during. In addition to that the harness bruises my hips... is there anything I can do to help aide the pain. I'm not much of a complainer this is the problem, its a pretty bad pain... I wouldn't say I already have back problems but i'm notorious for having back aches fairly easily.... anybody else feel this or... have advice for my back and hips?

I used to tote a marching bass drum, too. In general, you need to mind your posture. Tilt your hips forward and avoid arching your lower back. Don't slouch your shoulders, either.

If you can, ask your band director to let you march a smaller drum. And when you practice actual drumming, prop the drum on a chair. Don't harness on unless you have to actually march.

Exercise to strengthen your shoulder and back muscles. Your gym teacher should be able to give you tips here. Stetch often. Stretch your neck and back muscles.
