Put them on a schedule where they will not be bored, let them be inside when you are gone. Dogs dig because they get hot, cold, bored. You can build a sand box for the dog and teach it to dig there by burying treats and telling it "Dig Food" or "Dig Treat" and then pet the dog and the reward is the treat. They may start to dig in the box instead of undesirable places. To complete this training, supervise them when they are outside and stop them as soon as they start to dig, redirect them to the box.
Dogs get bored, lonely if they are left for hours on end in a yard. Take your dog for walks daily even if they have a huge yard. Also try and make a regular trip to a dog park where they can socialize with other dogs. They will love you for it.

Breeds have nothing to do with this bad behavior. A chihuahua can dig just as much as a terrier or a mastiff. This is simply due to lack of stimulation. WALK your dog EVERY DAY and make sure its done with boundaries. Make your dog heel, and come home tired! By simply making your dog tired and taking a leadership role in his life, he'll make the change. Just don't expect him to change overnight, he didn't start digging over night! A tired dog is a good dog! Be calm and assertive when you catch your dog digging, don't yell, or scream, or avert his attention with other toys or food. Avert his attention by touching him, and body block him from it if he keeps averting you. Don't yell, but use a calm and assertive tone with whatever command it is that you use, be it "No" or "Leave It" or whatever. Just remember, a tired mind is more likely to be open to what you have to teach, VS. a mind that is excited and going a hundred miles an hour! The sooner you walk your dog in the day, the sooner he is tired, the easier it will be to keep him from digging!

We had that same problem with our Border Collie. She use to do it lot in our other house just loved digging holes. I use to take some of my flower pots I was not using, fill up the hole and put the pot on top of it. After awhile she got bored cause I was covering up all her holes and the yard was filling up with pots.
She stopped on her own.
We moved into a larger house and half the backyard has red & brown stones in it and a small area for her. No more whole digging.
you can also sprinkle the refilled hole with garlic and that will keep the dogs away.. The smell they do not like....

This is going to sound stupid because it is so simple. Get them tired before going to bed. Yep, something so simple. Dogs dig for various reasons such as bored or chasing after something. The boredom thing can be stopped by tiring the dog out. I've had a lot of dogs in my life and this method has always put a stop to the digging. Make them chase a ball, rag or a kong. Make them run for at least 15-30 minutes a day. You'd be amazed how something so simple works. Biggest thing, just make sure you don't do it too soon after feeding them or too soon before feeding them. I usually weight 2-3 hours after feeding before making them do any strenuous exercise.

The dog poop thing is pretty good, but I always use a sandwich baggy filled with vinegar and water. Put it in the hole and lightly cover it with dirt. The dog digs it up and gets a spray of vinegar. It won't hurt the dog, but he will not like it. Make sure to use only 1 part vinegar to 2-3 parts water

1. What breed do you have?
2. Is he or she neutered or spayed?
3. Do you exercise/train/spend quality time with the dog?
4. Is it an outdoor only dog?
You need to find the root of why your dog is digging to address the problem.
You can set up a digging area and teach your dog to dig in that spot only! Bury treats, toys, and bones there to encourage digging. Tell the dog "Dig" when you take her to that area, and encourage her. If you catch her digging somewhere else, say "No dig," firmly and then take her to her digging area and tell her "Dig." Praise her when whe digs in her area!!!

You must first look at the breed. Some breeds are hunters that dig and burrow to find their prey. So is he doing this or just being distructive. Okay once you figure that out you can begin to stop the activity. If it is destructive behavior you simply cover up the hole but leave about 2 inches deep. Put his or her own fresh poop in the hole and cover it level. Dogs will not continue to dig in their own poop. They will in other dogs though so be sure to use his own and make it fresh. Do this multiple times and the dog will stop! If he is hunting - good luck it is his nature. Know your dog!

RE: the thank you to provide up a dogs from digging holes on your backyard? My dogs has only at present began digging up my finished backyard. She has in no way accomplished that previously, and now there is enormous gaping holes everywhere, what do you recommend I would desire to do to make her provide up. I fuss at her once I seize her, yet she many times does it whilst no person is around, and then whilst it rains, those...

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water and a few drops of citronella oil. When you catch him doing it give him a quick surprise spray. If he is only doing it in one area bury his feces there. He wont want to dig in that. Is he potentially bored? More toys? Is he burying things? If so dont give him any more of what he is burying.
