I reecomend taking a look at the Ford Laser upto 1994 if your in Australia or NZ....they are reliable, fairly bullet proof just make sure that you have insurance and a good immobiliser......all in all not a bad car at all...
mine is a manual 1992 hatch which goes suprisingly quick with only a stock engine under it.........going to sell it though as my partner is buying me a Subaru wrx sedan.
on a sidenote, before a long trip make sure it has oil and water in it as I was on the Tasmanian northwest coast-Sherwater and mine had pipes that suddenly blew and a headgasket, just overheated and before I knew I had to ring dad and get him to help me get it home so that wasn't good, cost me almost $500 so lesson is make sure it has water and oil.
oh the laser is available in both manual and auto transmissions, autos being more common.
hope this helps
Mitch

I have to agree with Mitch here - Lasers are bloody good, reliable cars. My mum had her 1993 laser for seven years and it was amazing - it never broke down, only had a few problems that all used cars eventually have and I think she only ever had it serviced once or twice... I'm serious. And that is the only reason it died when it did, it blew a head gasket but I'm sure that could've been prevented if she'd had it serviced. But apart from it's tragic death due to negligence - it was a fantastic car, it took us on many road trips and like I said it never broke down. My best friend has an '89 Laser hatch which she paid 1000 bucks for and it has something like 360 000kms on the clock - and it's been great. It's really zippy and reliable - she took it on a 2000km road trip and it was fine. They just go and go and go...
Just make sure you get it serviced and check the oil and water once in a while - unlike my fool of a mother!

Actually something like a Crown Victoria might be better. These see mto sell pretty cheap with lower miles on them. They have the bulletproof 302 or 4.6 engines and the tranny's are pretty stout. The car is bigger, so you will have a bit more prptection in a crash. The small cars are fine, but you will buy one that is pretty used up for the money.
