The largest breed of dog in heigth is the Irish Wolf Hound - the largest in size is generally the Rotwieller. I don't understand why you say a Great Dane won't trust you. Danes are the most docile large dog you can own. They are protective but they are also couch potatoes that love all people. A great apartment dog!

The truth is that your answer does not come from a Breed specific answer but instead a Dog specific answer. Many breeds that are not known for being aggressive can produce personal protection dogs. I've trained dogs for many years and the most common are obviously the German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and American Bulldogs. However, the truth is a GREAT protection dog can come from breeds such as the Golden Retriever, Labrador, Giant Schnauzers, and many types of Mastiffs. It all depends on the individual dogs character. They need to have a certain degree of Prey Drive, Defensive Drive, and Fight Drive for the dog to be used for protection work. As you stated, Great Danes are not dogs for protection work because in their history, they were never used for this work and as individuals they are too reliant on others. You want a dog that is willing to act on its own when the time comes. Your best bet is to look for a kennel that does the protection training first and talk to them about their dogs. Know this, a personal protection dog will not cost less than 2000 depending on how much training the dog has gone through. IF you want a breed specific answer, the biggest dog i'd go for is a French Mastiff. They are big but still agile enough to do the work.

The largest dog in the world is a mastiff,....
Great Danes are very gentle dogs.
You dont need a huge dog to protect you, if people look at your great dane (if you have one) they wont mess with you.
I moved to Toronto a couple years ago with my brother into the "ghetto" (believe me, nothing like the american ghetto but still a city of millions)
I found out it was not a great neighborhood by waiting at the bus stop with nice clothes on and the cops stopped and asked me if I was lost! They then drove me to the subway!... I didnt stay with my brother for too long!
When I walked my Rottweiler around that neighborhood,... people avoided me like the plague, I guess they assumed that she was visous.
Quite the contrary, she allowed my landlady to take strangers through my apartment to show it without my being there.
The point is, that any dog will protect you, yet it probably will never come to that unless you are already in trouble. That is definitely no reason to have a dog.
A dog that is visous is more of a hassle than it is worth to protect you, and is more likely to bite someone you love.

Protection can be a trained response. Some breeds adapt to this better than others. Rotweillers, Dobermans, & German Shepards are all STRONG larger breed dogs that have endurance. Many or the others mentioned here don't have the endurance or strength just the size. Attitude helps also. That is why professional guard dogs are generally one of these three breeds.
One of the three would be my suggestion. Incidently even though we are a pet store we do not regularly sell any of those breeds as we do not use brokers or puppy mills so I am not trying to get you to buy something from me.

Dobermans. Hands down. They LOOK scary and can be if they need to protect the ones they love, but without any threat they are like big lovable puppies.

well, mastiffs get huge, but great danes are among the most loyal and friendly dogs there are. also, you might consider a pit bull, who get a ridiculously bad rap for no real reason, they will die for their masters, they are great with kids, and they are really strong and smart

Mastiff is heaviest, Irish Wolfhound is tallest. Mastiffs are more protective though.

I think a german shephard. My dog was a german shephard and if he scented an unfamiliar scent he'd start barking and growling till someone checked it out or he would break loose and guard the entrance.
