My great grandfather was Sicilian. He came over at the age of 12, because of the repression in Sicily. Sicilians were mostly farmers, vineyards and vegetables, but they were excellent builders. He caught on with a stone mason and became a master and at the age of 18 began building his own houses, in South Philadelphia, just north of where the Phillies and Eagles now have their stadiums, they are beautiful stone buildings with character and the craftsmanship has no peer. He also continued his winemaking and sold a few bottles on the side; especially during prohibition. Now you have to understand that they came from a very difficult situation, back home the local gangs would steal their crops and worse, so they formed an organization for self preservation called The Black Hand, which we know as the Mafia. Many of his friends came from this circumstance and learned at a young age to fight for everything, there were some very dangerous characters among them and I knew a few, of course we only knew of them as uncles and their business was never spoken of. Anyway, my grandfathers money was all tied up in his houses and when the depression came, he was ruined. He went back to day work as a bricklayer, but of course there wasn't much building then. When FDR started the New Deal he was able to get work again, enough to support his family, and if anyone ever said a bad word about FDR, you would never see them in his house again!
