Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful dogs in the right home, but to provide a good home for them, you need to understand what the breed was meant to do.

Alaskan Malamutes are bred to pull sleds through the snow over long distances. They love to work, generally get along well with other dogs (a necessary trait when pulling sleds), do well in cold climates, and tend to be on the independent side.
As a result, they need lots of exercise to be happy. A small 15 minute walk once a day just won't cut it! Alaskan Malamutes can survive in warm temperatures, but care must be taken to provide adequate shade and water, or else they will become very sick.
Alaskan Malamutes love to dig, and if not taught from puppyhood, may dig up your entire yard. They tend to be escape artists, and need a tall fenced yard. They very independant, and as a result make poor off leash dogs. They are very friendly, and can't be counted on to protect your house.
If this is what you want from a dog, then you will be very happy with this kind of dog. If you aren't prepared to exercise the Malamute every day, and provide a safe place for the dog to exercise, then you might find yourself (and the dog) very unhappy.
Hope this helps!
