One person's allergies may vary greatly from another person's. It is always wise to visit the dog to see if you are allergic to it before you bring it home.

Here is a list of breeds that are good for allergy sufferers (and a link to learn more about the breed):

It is possible that a dog with more of a hairlike quality fur will cause less allergies, but my understanding it may be the dog dander that causes allergies. Although some breeds that may cause less to no irritation are: Poodle, Yorkie, Silky, Maltese, Schnauzer, Hairless Crested(no hair or fur at all) btw these dogs also do not shed.

I'm allergic to cats and dogs. It's worse with cats thank God, because I really love dogs, but it's the short hair type of dog because of the dander that drives me crazy. I can deal way better with a long haired dog like my Golden Retriever. I too heard of the allergy free dog, but I think there is only the one type out so far. Must really cost a small fortune too. I saw it on one of those 60 Minutes type of shows.

Umm.. poodles generally don't give too much of a problem when it comes to allergys, the main problems come from dandruff and shedding, which poodles have a very small amount of. In any event, they do make a special medication for people allergic to cats and dogs, so they can still have the animals they want.

Most people can handle the shorter haired dogs. The allergies come from the dander that the breed of dog creates. There are tons of short haired dogs out there. Poodles labs Chihuahuas are only a few of them. Ask a local vet on which breed would be less irritating to her allergies.

What coat-type makes the difference?
There are two coat types that produce a lesser amount of allergens: single-coated dogs, who do not have a thick undercoat, and hairless dogs. However even hairless dogs can produce enough dander to to affect a highly allergic person.

Hair-less Dog Breeds

Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless)
American Hairless Terrier
Chinese Crested (Hairless)
Peruvian Inca Orchid

Some of Single-Coated Dog Breeds

Chinese Crested (Powder Puff)
Poodles (all sizes)
Schnauzers (all sizes)
Portuguese Water Dog
Bichon Frise
Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
Coton de Tulear
Kerry Blue Terrier
West Highland White Terrier

I have raised over 13 dogs and I have to say the poodle is the one that can be the best pet for those struggling w/ allergies. I have a tea-cup poodle of my own and I'm allergy free, but when I used to have a chihuahua... oh boy, running nose, itchy throat, and sneezing constantly. The reason being, poodles don't shed a lot.

yorkies are hair dogs. for some reason, what they have is called 'hair' and not 'fur'. I think it has something to do with shedding or needing to be trimmed, but i am not certain.

I think poodles are too, but I am not certain about that one. There are probably other breeds.

She should try being around one of these dogs before she brings one into her home, though.

I have a Bichonpoo (1/2 Bichon Frise 1/2 Poodle) both are "hair" dogs. so are Maltese, and Yorkshire terriers.

I have heard Poodles, Bichon Frise's and Pomeranians have hypoallergenic fur and even people that are usually allergic to dogs are not allergic to those certain breeds.
