You will be the only brit there so whatever you wear you can claim it is what is traditional for an english wedding.
Go for a hat and smart dress. Cover your shoulders and knees if you don't want to offend any grannies. Your red hair is going to make you stand out so make the most of it.
Or phone the groom's moother and ask for her advice.

Can your boyfriend not give you some idea of how formal the wedding is going to be. I saw a wedding in Sicily a few years ago and the guests were wearing very summery clothes of all different colours and most of the people wore hats but not all.

I don't think you should wear a hat. I'm Spanish and weddings here are very similar to Italian ones. Have a look to these photos that I've found in the internet about Italian weddings:

I hope they have air conditioning in the dining room. There, you all will spend most of the time, eating, drinking and dancing. Have a lot of fun.

Try The Hello, and Her Majesty Magazines. They are European magazines that royalty and stars are featured in.
The TomKat wedding in Italy, I believe she wore a veil, and a super cool wedding dress by Armani. It wasn't glitzy or glamorous just beautiful. Pick an Italian Wedding Designer and they can suggest what you can wear. Hats are more preferable in England, or with the elite crowd for weddings, unless you want to wear one.

Wear a pastel dress, light weight, a hat (my sister married a Sicilian), and make sure the dress is knee length. You can change into something more revealing at the reception, but in the church, they tend to be very conservative and frown upon low necklines, short skirts, and by the way, Levi would be a big, huge no no.

A bullet prof vest springs to mind but I have probably seen the Godfather to many times, why not be the Lady in Red?

I feel that skirts tend to either look kind of cheap or trashy if they are tight and short, or these are just the ordinary jean skirts that aren't necessarily sexy.

Try maxi skirts with the medial side slits those will look great on you! No matter whether you have long legs or not merely strut that skirt
