because you said you live on a farm I'm going to suggest a couple of the herding breeds. The German Shepherd is the first one that jumps to many peoples minds but you also have the Belgium Malinois, Belgium Tervuren and the Old English sheepdog. All these breeds can be trained for protection work as well as farm work. Being natural herders, they can be useful around the farm as well. Rottweilers have been used on farms in the past but are known for not getting along with cows and horses. Also, it would preferable to have you children be at least 10 before getting a Rottweiler in such an open space. Biggest thing, if you decide on a German Shepherd or Rottweiler, make sure you get one from a reputable kennel and not a pet shop. From the kennel you will know what you are getting in terms of background, aggression, protectiveness, family values, and even if they get along with other animals. You could also use Dobermans but the can become VERY territorial of the farm and not allow ANYONE or ANYTHING in to include relatives and friends.

Just about any dog that you raise will be protective of your family. Its instinct. Males are Territorial and females are maternal with kids. If you have a farm and you want to be different get a goat and some geese they will fight any thing or one that threatens their turf except the hand that feeds them. The dogs are great for inside. In general labs, shepherds, rotts, huskies, mix breeds, anything if you train it to protect the home and family

I agree, that Rottweilers are wonderful guard dogs, and great around children. What I do not know, is how they'd do around livestock, if you have any.
Now, if you have livestock, the best guard dog for both your family and your livestock, would be:
Anatolian Shepherds, Tibetan Mastiffs, & Great Pyrenees.
Of course, please do research on any breed, before bringing one home. Also spend time to know the personality of the individual dog, as they may not always fit the breed personality description.

without question a german sheppard is the number one guard dog they tend to be very protective in nature. However a golden retriever is a very loyal dog who is great with family. The german sheps are very smart too, you can train him easily.
