Sure you can, maybe you should try out sdopting? You'd probably have a better chance finding an older parakeet anyway. Try petfinder.com for parakeets.

Birds take a great deal of time and energy and to many people do not realize that when they buy a bird and there are always birds for adoption. lots of web sites that are trying to find homes for unwanted birds. just remember they need time attention just like a child. they are and can be a lot of work and mess.It is wise to read up on the care and about the bird you want to buy before getting one, also talk to owners or pet stores birds have feelings and have behavior problems when they are neglected or mistreated. I own a Quaker Parrot and a Cockatoo. both are very time consuming

There are many parrot rescue organizations that would be thrilled if an experienced bird owner wanted to adopt one of their many homeless pets.
I re-homed a 15-year old White-Eyed Conure and trust me, age means nothing. With patience and time, you can take even an "unadoptable" bird and build a warm and loving relationship between the two of you. However, there aren't any guarantees that an older (or younger for that matter) bird will bond with your current Budgie companion.
Good luck!

Generally, the oldest birds which you will find in a pet store are one year old. Have a look for some breeders i you area as they might be able to sell you one of their older birds or keep an eye out for people giving their birds away or selling them in the newspaper or in the classifieds. Good luck, and I hope you can find a friend for your budgie!

like the other person, try checking out your local craigslist or freecycle, sadly to say there are always budgies on there :( ask the owners if the bird is friendly around other birds, how old, etc. before you introduce your new bird be SURE to quarantine him far away from your current budgie. just because you get another bird, doesnt mean they will get along. dont put them in the same cage at once, try introducing hem over a period of about a month, and see if they are happy together, if not, please dont put them in the same cage. moggie, saying you have bred thousands of babies doesnt make you sound like a know it all, it makes you soud careless and like your in it for the buck. go to any craiglist, you'll find 15 budgies on there, and your not helping that. edit: moggie, i am sorry for asuuming. around here, what people call show breeders, are the ones that breed thousands and thousands of birds to get a few with desired coloring or other features. its nice to know that there are some breeders who are getting the budgies good homes. also, breeders around have probably 80 keets in small filthy cages and they keep breeding more and more, it sounds like you have a large, well kept facility and again im sorry

First off "old age" wouldn't be a cause of death until they're actually old - like 15 years. Budgies can live to be in their twenties if cared for properly.
And why buy a bird when you can adopt? I have not had success with craigslist or petfinder in my area, but I have adopted birds from my local humane society, as well as birds abandoned at PetCo.

You'd probably have to buy one second-hand, as opposed to from a pet store. Maybe a younger bird would cheer the older one up though, and make it peppier.

From a petstore, not likely. But what you can do, is check your local classifieds, Craigslist.org, and Petfinder.com for people who are in need of finding new homes for their parakeets.
