I think woodburning is best. Why? Because it's natural, it's cheaper, and the wood is easier to access. Downside? Mostly smoke. Beware wet wood or closed/dirty flues. As for gas, it's expensive, it can be hard to get, and you run the risk of leaks, etc. Price-wise, you can get some pretty pricey fireplaces both ways. Oh, one more thing, I would suggest having a blower added to my woodburning fireplace. They're wonderful!

Well, both the kind of fireplaces has some pros and cons, but if consider the major factors then there are few things in which we can compare both of the fireplaces: Difficulty Level of Use: The gas fireplaces are easy to use while wood burning fireplaces require a lot more efforts. In these first you need to get some wood, then you need to arrange in a proper way and then start fire and maintenance. Gas fireplaces are really very good when you just want to warmth your home and want a fireplace to look at. Fuel Cost: Here the advantage is for wood as you can buy wood from firewood or hardware store. Maintenance: The wood fire is not a fun to clean, the dust, ash and burned out woods are cluttered and spread very easily while gas fireplaces are easy to maintain and they are to operate. There is no messy cleanup and now sweeping required. So in the term of maintenance gas fireplaces are advantageous.

there is nothing more traditional and wonderful than a real wood burning stove. The smell and sound of wood burning cannot be replicated with a gas fireplace. Yet the up keep can be more involving then with gas. A real working fireplace adds value to your home as well. If you must do the gas thing, get one that isn't trying to look like a real fireplace. Fake logs look fake. Get one with silica rocks or something unique. We can all tell a gas fireplace a mile away.

Having had both wood & gas I chose gas logs to replace the messy & dangerous wood.
If it is to actually "heat" a room no question gas logs fall short so while the installers were busy they installed two wall mounted gas radiant heaters.
The cost of wood is increasing, the storage of the wood brings unwanted bugs into the home and takes up yard space. Then there are ashes and the disposal.
Go with gas.

Enjoyed the wood fireplace for the real "ambience", the sound of the wood crackling and the scent. Wasn't thrilled to buy, cut & stack firewood, or cleaning the ashes out. The gas one is clean & quick, don't know if the cost of the gas offsets the price of the firewood.

Gas - easier to turn on, but no smoky fragrance or crackling sound
Wood - requires more work, floo lets out central heating, but a lot more comfy and pleasant
personally i'd use wood.

Wood is defiantly a better heat, it warms you thoroughly while gas seems to only warm you on the surface.
