This is not an easy question to answer. Every language is difficult for different reasons.

Arabic is nothing like a western language. It uses a different alphabet, written right to left.

Japanese uses pictograph symbols as well as two different phonetic alphabets.

Chinese uses pictographs, but is an extremely logical language. The difficulty for us westerners is that it's words change meanings with tone.

I personally think that English is the most difficult because of the large number of inconsistencies. German and French have almost as many.

I know nothing about Swahili, so I'm not sure where to put it.

Having said this, I would have to rate them:

English>French>German>Arabic>Chinese>Japanese>Spanish

Starting with the hardest, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, German, English, French, Spanish, Swahili in that order.

This really is a hard question to answer. I speak Arabic, and I can tell you, it's hard. but I would rank them like this:

Japanese>Chinese>Arabic>Spanish>German>French>English

Have no idea what Swahili is.

I read someplace that Chinese was the hardest because they don't have an alphabet and you have to learn like thousands of symbols. Each symbol is a word.
