You ever met a drill sergeant before? You think they're all sunshine and puppies?

A drill sergeant's primary purpose in life is to be as big of an asshole as possible, and to piss you off until you get over it and achieve some level of physical and mental toughness.

Col. Shaw and his subordinates had a tough job to do with a unit that many either did not want or did not think was necessary. Had he failed, it would have been an embarassment to the U.S. government and would have left many people in the Union wondering why they were bothering to fight for a group that had proved it couldn't fight on its own. He had to push his men to the limit to succeed, and he did.

I'm not really sure how you didn't already get that from the movie, if you even watched it in the first place, but you ought to do a little reading about the actual men involved and you might learn a thing or two about building character and facing adversity.

Drill Sergeants are not "rough on black troops". Drill Sergeants are rough on everybody. That's just how it's supposed to be.

It was the filmmaker's goal to represent that racism at that time (regardless of whether it was the North of the South) was rampant and completely acceptable. That there were few if any options for the black soldiers--they'd simply have to put up with it.

Just because the North was fighting against slavery (at least ostensibly) doesn't mean they were all of a mind as to the value of blacks or black's status as human beings.

To weed out those that were mentally weak and also to assert military authority and to toughen them up. Their treatment was kind in comparison to what fighting in real battle would prove to be. Being called a N..ger is much more pleasant than getting a bayonet in the back because you tried running out of fear and lack of discipline!

Because he is a drill sergeant. If you want sensitive, gentle soldiers fighting against ruthless terrorist insurgents, be my guest. You want to join the army? You can toughen up, or you can leave.
As for the movie, that's Hollywood.

Maybe you should post this in the "Movies" section of this site. You'll get a lot more answers. This section is for the real military, not movies about it.
