You should talk to your friend first. If your friend would be uncomfortable with it, then you should not date him. If she is ok with it, than go for it.

you could ask your friend nicely if it would be okay to date her ex. sometimes they prefare you to ask them instead because maybe she still likes him and you could loose her friendship.
