To get him to stop scratching at the couch, I'd suggest double-sided sticky tape. Cats don't like that sticky feeling on their paws. Also, keep a spray bottle with water handy, so if you see him preparing to scratch, you can give him a little spray of water.

My cat didn't really go for the scratching posts either. A friend suggested one of the Turbo Chaser things (a big round disk that has a ball he can chase) that has a scratching pad on the inside. He didn't really take to it at first, and I actually had to show him how to use it--though he probably just did that so I'd look silly =) Then I'd give him a treat whenever I saw him using it. Hope this helps!

Try sprayint the couch with something like vinegar and water or something the cat won't like. Also, when you're home try spraying the cat every time it does it. With plain water. That may train it. Other than that you may have to tape some plastic or cardboard around the area. When you aren't home keep the cat confined. Really, this is a behavior problem and may want negative attention. Spray and then offer the scratching post when the cat comes back out. They are pretty smart. Good luck. Cats can be stubborn. I have 2.

I would try to convince the cat to use the scratching post by rewarding it treats whenever it does use the scratching post. You'll probably have to start this trend by showing the cat how to scratch the post instead of the couch, but eventually the cat should get the hang of it. Or get it declawed. Both methods are relatively cheap.

Don't listen to us! Ask your vet.

Do some research about declawing before you take that step. There is some debate about whether or not it is humane or causes long-term detriment to a cat. I have had cats who were declawed and they do seem to exhibit behavioral changes.

See link below for an overview of the declawing debate.

the only way to stop that is to get it declawed or teach it not to which is extremly hard. when a cat scratches on something like that it means they are tring to sharpen there claws.

Get some spray catnip and spritz it on the scratching post. Or get a citrus spray and spritz your couch... it will deter her by the smell. You can get either at most pet stores.

Declaw him. Spray him with water every time he goes to scratch your couch.-It's harmless and eventually he will learn not to scratch your couch.

The cats do this to get attention. Just have the claws trimmed and no damage will be done.
