Ok, I love my kitten to death but I am new at this. I really don't have anywhere else to keep his litter box but in the living room. I only have a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room in my house. I clean the box daily but everytime I walk in my house it kinda smells like litter box. Any ideas? I am desperate. I have family coming this weekend and I don't want my house to smell like litter box. I have a deodorized clumping litter. I use fresh step and I but that arm and hammer deodorizer for litter boxes in it. Also, How often am I supposed to change the litter completely? That box is like $12 and it isn't that big. Please help!

Try a covered litter box instead of an open one. Try a crystal blends litter and clean out completely once a week.

Litter box smell is hard to get rid of. I was going to recommend deoderizing litter, but you already did that. A lot of people keep the litter box in the bathroom if there is room. You could turn the litter box toward the wall and let the kitty go around to it. A covered litter box helps a lot. Other than that, we got a lot of glade plug ins, air out the house as much as possible, and spray with oust or light candles. I think you're supposed to change the whole litter box every week and wash it out, but you can definitely push that since it is so expensive. I just do it when it looks like it needs it - it gets stuck on the bottom a little and you can just tell. Usually, if you have a cat you get a little smell, but you can reduce it a lot.

Try changing her/his food to maybe Purina- the cheaper the food the worse your litter smells. Is your kitty spayed-ed/neutered? If not that could be the source too. When kittens/cats are not spayed-ed/neutered they tend to have a smellier box than those who are. ( previous exp, with 2 UN neutered male cats- talk about eweeeee) Try cleaning it out all the way once a week -dump all-clean with bleach and dry then refill .. Also febreze noticables are worth the money. They are, I feel the best air freshener there is ever..lol.-8$ to start and 4$ for the refill after that. -Worth every penny. I use it and I love it. Keep with the Fresh Step that works too. But try the others that I mentioned and see what happens. Good Luck- Also try to air out your house that will help too.

Keep an eye on your cat and remove the poop IMMEDIATELY after he does it. I mean within a minute. Also, clean the litterbox itself at least once a week with a weak bleach solution (about 4-6 ounces of bleach per gallon of water) and add fresh litter. You don't have to waste your money on expensive litter if you follow these steps. I have had cats for 25 years and use the cheapest litter available and don't have any smell.

Put the litter box in the bathroom, it's the most common place for them. Also, if your cat doesn't tear them up, you can use litterpan liners, to make cleaning easier.
Do scoop-cleaning several times a day, maybe get a ''litter locker'' container for the waste, as that helps enclose the smell.
I usually do a full litter box clean, weekly or bi-weekly. (I do not use liners).
Try switching litter. They have a "Small Spaces" litter, that works pretty good. I think it lives up to it's name, and is truly suitable for small spaces. Helps keep the odor down.

Also, depending on what you are feeding your cat, maybe feeding her a better quality food, will help with the odors.

I had to change mine completely once a week in order to keep the smell contained. Also make sure the filter on the top of your litter box is changed often. And get one of those strong scented candles (cinnamon is the best for blocking out other smells because it is so strong, but other smells work too as long as it's a really fragrant candle) - go for the ones in the big glass jarsmade by YANKEE....they're great! good luck!

I'd put it in the bathroom or some other room besides your main living area. Once the kitten learns to "cover up" better it won't be so bad. I have four cats and two litter boxes and my house doesn't smell at all.

I have covered litter boxes for my cats. I use Tidy Cats Clumping litter and it works really well for my cats. I scoop out and dispose of their yucky stuff once or twice a day. I completely dump out the old stuff, scrub it down and dry it good and put in fresh litter every 2 weeks. It seems to do the trick for our household. It also wouldn't hurt to open up a window and air it out now and then.

get rid of the clumping stuff and go and buy some wood pellet litter. Honestly it is brilliant. I have 12 cats here and the litter trays don't stink. You only need to use a little and as they pee is dissolves and expands. All you smell is pine. Just scoop the turds out every day.
