I am writing my Christmas cards, and I'm sending one to a Russian friend. I've taken Russian classes before, but we didn't learn how to say Merry Christmas. Is "С новым рождество" correct? Could anyone help me out? And don't give me links to on-line translators. I'd like the answer from someone who actually knows. And in Cyrillic alphabet, too, please! Thanks!

Hi, I'm from Argentina (sorry if my english is not very good!) I lived in Russia for a year.

They say "с рождеством".

But you better say "с новым годом" (It means "Happy new year"), it is more used. Or "с новым годом и рождеством".

In Russia, Christmas is not on 25 december, they celebrate it on 7 january. Remember that when you send your card!

No. 'С новым рождество' wouldn't be right. That's for С новым годом! (Happy New Year). Merry Christmas is С Рождеством!

The Russian above is right. that's, regardless of the undeniable fact that, a shortened version of "I congratulate you with the start of Christ." The "I congratulate you" is skipped over of greetings in Russian, that's only implied. Your first occasion could be a extra secular version of Merry Christmas. even nevertheless it refers back to the start of Christ, it may would desire to be translated for an earthly purpose marketplace as "satisfied holiday journeys" even nevertheless it isn't any longer entirely removed from Christianity by using this. the two are superb, yet your first occasion is extra user-friendly.
