Two different men came up to me at work today, smiled and one said, "Nice pants" while the other said, "I like your pants." They seemed to be very friendly and the compliment made me feel good. I just wonder if I should consider it flirting or just being nice. Guys, can you give me some insight as to how much, if any, you notice what a woman is wearing and would you go out of your way to compliment it if you weren't attracted to her? Thanks!

Well, remember always that nearly all men are created simple. If we compliment a woman on her clothing, we have usually recognised her as attractive. And this we do for the only thing we like more than sports on TV: "sports in bed".
I admit that lots of men will be very angry now and say: "I am not bad like that! Of course I would compliment her if she wears nice pants or else!"
Sorry, guys, we're too simple to think such complexe thoughts. When you recognise her by her pants, you have already checked her body on matching. Lots of sociologists are saying the same: Men want to have as much descendants as possible. This is evolution, guys - no chance to deny.
To return to your question: If two different men were complimenting you on your pants they were of course flirting! Or you wore some kind of mini-pants...
When a man notices a woman's clothing, he is interested in her. Think of the lot of husbands not recognising that you were at the hairdresser! Normally the first thing a man checks on a woman is her decolleté (do you say so?), the second one is her "deep back", the third one are her lips and the fourth (!!!) thing are her eyes.
Everyone else protesting that he looks at first in her eyes should check up his sex - evolution made us always looking for the ideal partner for "producing descendants". That's why men are so simple to understand but women are a big puzzle for each other. She has to think about lots of risks awaiting her in pregnancy and after - he has to think only about the best "gen pool".
I'm sorry for using some prejudices, but all of them are true...

In general I would think the men are attracted to you.
I don't recall any time in my life that I've taken the time to compliment a woman on her clothing if I didn't find her attractive as well.
However, I have complimented women that I found attractive, even when I knew there was no chance of anything ever happening between us.
But yes it does qualify as a kind of flirting...
And it sounds like you're quite attractive if you're garnering multiple compliments... and quite a pair of pants as well.

Flirting or just being nice? depends on who the guys were & what (if any) relationship they have had (or want to have) with you. It could be either one..hard to tell. Look at past interactions with the guys & maybe their ages & positions in the company in relationship to yours.
Guys DO notice what the gals wear, but in this day & age of political correctness & lawsuites, it's best to keep one's moth shut & not say anything--which is really to bad !! But we do notice !!!
An innocent compliment can be turned into sexual harrassment real fast by the slimeball lawyers.
Sometimes I'd like to pass on a compliment, but I don't. Why? Political correctness..not sure she wants the personal comment about her appearance....not sure how she'll take it...don't want to open up a discussion with her about non business stuff...there are lots of reasons to just keep ones opinion to ones self in today's day & age.

if a guy notices that a girl is wearing something nice, he can surely comment without it being flirting. It really is up to the girl whether or not to take it as a flirt, but it's all in the way the guy says it

Sometimes we compliment just to compliment. But 65% of the time we might be flirting. Or they could just like your pants. Focus on how they said it and/or the way they acted.

To be frank, I, almost exclusively, tend to notice the clothes only of women I like. But then again, those guys may or may not have been flirting.
Beauty, I would have loved to see you in those pants. And, um, yes, I am flirting right now.

I wouldnt want a female to even think I am flirting so I wouldnt comment unless I intend it to be a flirt.
In the rare case I might say something when she knows for a fact that no flirt was intended.
I must say though, your avatar is cute.

well im a younger man and i think its a compliment. regardless of how young you look, we know if ur older or now because of how you carry yourself. and we like you because of your maturity and your composure. it is definitely a compliment. its also hard for guys like that, cuz the average girl likes men older than them... so be flattered if anything at all. you won't hurt anyone's feelings that way.

The only reason a guy would say this would to be flirting or to get you somewhat interested in him.
Either that or the two guys bet each other on who could get with you first.
